Market Update: Key indices close in Red, Midcaps outperform

Markets at a Glance:

Benchmark indices ended marginally lower, with Sensex falling by 95 points and Nifty plunging by almost 8 points. Sector-wise, Auto, FMCG, IT and Pharma ended in the green, while Banks, Financial Services, Metals and Realty took some beating. Midcap and Smallcap indices outperformed benchmark indices.

Top Gainers/Losers:

Bharti Infratel, Grasim Industries, Titan, UPL and Wipro were the top gainers in today’s session, while ICICI Bank, Bharti Airtel, Hindalco, Kotak Bank and Powergrid were among the top losers.

DII/FII Data:

DIIs and FIIs both showed their confidence in Indian markets by investing a net amount of Rs.120.08 crore and Rs.7.72 crore respectively, as per the data available on the NSE website.

Page Industries posts weak Q1 numbers:

Page Industries, which owns exclusive licensee of JOCKEY and Speedo Brand in India, has reported 39.55 crore loss for the quarter ended on June. It said a profit of 110.67 crores in the same quarter last year. Revenue also plunged by 65.89% on YoY.

In another news, Norway’s sovereign wealth fund has excluded Page Industries from its portfolio due to human rights violation including labour rights abuse. Speedo International started an investigation against its Indian partner based on the report. Shares of page industries fell almost 3% in today’s session.

Govt allows the domestic airline to operate with 60% capacity from the current 45%:

In a positive move for the Airline sector, the Government allowed airlines to operate with 60% capacity in domestic airspace. Airline stocks jumped over the news, with InterGlobe Aviation climbing 2.38% in today’s session.

Vodafone-Idea shares jumped as much as 30% in a single trading session:

On the news of Vodafone-Idea’s plan to raise funds to 1.5 billion dollars through share sale caused a dramatic up movement of 30% in stock price today. There are other media reports as well as reporting a possible stake purchase of 4 billion dollars from Amazon Inc and Verizon Communications. The company is also planning to sell-off its fibre business.

NBCC Signs an MoU with EC of Rs.150 crore:

GOI’s Navratna Company, NBCC India, signed an MoU with Election Commission of India for planning, designing and construction of office building in Dwarka, New Delhi. NBCC will work as Project Management Consultant for the project of Rs.150 crore. The share price of NBCC saw a surge of 5.5% today and closed at Rs.28.35 on NSE.
